There was commotion this morning after a busy pedestrian crossing in San Gwann was blocked off by concrete barriers.

Works are underway to widen and re-align the last stretch of Tal-Balal Road, near the Ta’ Zwejt Housing Estate and the junction leading to the centre of San Gwann.

On Friday morning, concrete barriers were placed in the middle of the road, replacing a central strip that was removed the day before.

But pedestrians found that there was nowhere to cross the road as the barriers had also blocked off the part of the road where there were traffic lights (that have now been removed).

A number of people complained with Transport Malta officers who are on duty at the site, telling them that there was nowhere to cross the road safely. At one point, a man was seen shouting at the officials.

Common sense finally prevailed and the barrier blocking the crossing was later removed and a path of sorts was created using plastic traffic barriers.
