A man has been charged with the attempted murder of a pastizzeria employee.

The incident took place in Luqa last Monday.

The 44-year-old man, Gordon Calleja of Luqa, was charged before Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo today. He was accused of attempting to murder the employee, causing him serious injuries.

The aggressor fled when he saw officers from the police station heading towards him, speeding away in his car. Police arrested him at his Luqa home minutes later after the injured employee had gone to the police station to report in the incident.

Calleja was also charged with stealing €400, was in possession of a weapon without the permission of the police commissioner and that be breached public peace.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody. Calleja is being kept at the forensic unit of Mount Carmel Hospital.

Prosecuting inspectors Kurt Zahra and Pawlu Camilleri explained that the accused was taken to Mount Carmel Hospital after he had been caught and was placed under the care of a consultant, who recommended that the man ought to be given further treatment.
