Birdlife CEO Mark Sultana said that a flamingo was just shot down in private fields in Munxar, Marsascala.

Bird hunting season is now closed, however Sultana is claiming that the hunters are shooting under the guise of rabbit hunting season.

Speaking in a Facebook video, he said the juvenile flamingo was flying with two other flamingos low in Marsascala bay trying to find refuge. “Unfortunately in 2019 our country still allows this to happen,” he said about the shooting.

He said that the hunters are using rabbit season as a smokescreen, and that laws and enforcement has been weakened. “We do not know how to protect the birds, and people like me who came out to enjoy the beautiful birds ended up witnessing an illegality.”

He said that he called the police but 20 minutes later, when he posted the video, they had not yet arrived and were far away.
