Well-known Carnival enthusiast Jean Paul Bonett lost his life today doing one of the things he loved best: working on Carnival floats.

The 45-year-old man from Hamrun, known as ic-Chippy, died after he was electrocuted in a warehouse on Xatt il-Mollijiet, Marsa where he was reportedly working on a Carnival float on Thursday afternoon.

Bonnett was well known amongst carnival enthusiasts, and was working on floats for the Buffalo Carnival Company at the time.

As a result of the tragedy, Summer Carnival has been called off, the Justice, Culture and Local Government Ministry said in a statement.  The ministry expressed its solidarity with Bonett’s family, and acknowledged his artistry, dedication and leadership qualities at one of the country’s leading carnival companies.

The accident took place at around 4.05pm.

An ambulance was called but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli has launched an inquiry. The police are also investigating.
