The Senglea local council has filed an objection to a planned carpark and overlying dormitory as part of the American University of Malta campus.

In a statement, the council said the decision to object to the planned development was unanimous.

AUM, which currently uses what is called the British building along Cospicua’s Dock 1, has applied for a number of other projects in the area. These include the renovation and extension of the adjacent Knights building and the construction of an administration building in between.

It has also applied to build a dormitory on an area located near the entrance to Senglea. The site is currently used as a car park. AUM plans to construct an underground three-floor car park beneath the dorm.

Its plans have been criticized by government MP Glenn Bedingfield, who said AUM should not build on all open spaces in the area. He has also said that the university does not need a huge dormitory for its “dozen” students.
