Maggie Smith, the elderly woman who was injured in the Mellieha building collapse, has passed away, according to reports.

It is unclear whether the death was related in some way to the incident or not.

On 8 June, a four-storey building collapsed in Main Street, Mellieħa. On that day, Smith, who was trapped in the part of the building that remained standing, was rescued by personnel from the Civil Protection Department. She was taken to hospital for treatment to shock. Construction was taking place adjacent to the collapsed building. Debris from the falling building ended up in the hole excavated next to it as well as on the street. This incident, as well as some others, sparked the reform for construction sites that took place over summer.

Janet Walker, who went through a similar building collapse experience in Hamrun, posted on Facebook that she had received the sad news and expressed her condolences. “So sorry you didn’t pass your last few days in your home surrounded by your surroundings,” Walker posted.
