A Syrian national suspected of taking part in ISIS executions had been handed a suspended sentence in Malta.

The man had lived in Malta for a number of months using fake documents, it is being reported.

Hassan Farhoud, 27, was arrested in Hungary earlier this week and charged with having been a member of a terrorist organisation. He was also charged over the murder of people whose relatives had refused to join the Islamic State.

Last year, Farhoud had been found guilty by a Maltese court of carrying a fake Italian ID card. He had been given a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. The man had told the court that he would return to Greece, where he lived.

According to Hungarian media reports, Hungarian investigators have interviewed a number of people in connection with the arrest, including Maltese nationals.

The Malta Police Force is understood to have cooperated with Hungarian and Greek authorities.

In December, Farhoud had been arrested in Budapest in connection with human trafficking but his ISIS connections emerged during the subsequent investigations.

Greek intelligence sources confirmed that Farhoud travelled to Greece in 2016 and was granted asylum the following year. At the time, they did not have any information linking him to ISIS.
