Migrants detained at Safi are demanding their release, shouting and banging in a protest that started at 10.30am and quickly escalated.
Soldiers from the Armed Forces of Malta and police officers went on site to control the situation within the compound. Police officers were seen on site with riot gear, including shotguns and tear-gas.
Members of the Civil Protection Department as well as an ambulance with medical staff were also on site, but there are no reports of an injuries as yet.
At about 12.15pm, smoke was seen coming from the compound while the migrants continued to shout their demands. Mattresses were among the objects that were set on fire.
Migrants have been heard chanting slogans demanding to be freed. One migrant was seen (video) scaling the fence and shouting to be freed, while others were heard chanting in the yard.
Drivers are being urged to avoid the area.
