Updated (2): Watch – One person dead after car falls off cliff in Gharghur

A woman has died after a car fell off a cliff in Gharghur on Friday morning, the police said.

The police confirmed the accident took place at 8.15am in John Ayde Street, which overlooks the valley.

The car burst into flames as soon as it hit the side of the cliff. Members of the Civil Protection Department found a body inside after the flames were put out. 

The victim was later identified to be a 40-year-old woman from Korea.

CPD personnel are at this stage unsure whether there was anyone else in the rental vehicle, a Citroen C1, and a search is underway in the surrounding area. 

The cause of the accident is not yet known, a police spokesperson said (video below).

Magistrate Donatella Frendo is leading an inquiry.
