The nation wants a guarantee on the electricity provision because it’s a basic need, PN MP Mark Anthony Sammut said Monday.
Addressing a press conference, the MP said how despite the government saying that the situation is under control, people from around the country have confessed that they are still suffering from the recurring power cuts.
Residents from Rabat and had-Dingli have told Sammut that they have been without electricity for hours on end.
On the government blaming the previous administration for its current electricity provision problems he said that “the PL seems to have forgotten it has been ten years in government”.
Delving into problems in the health sector which have been caused by these powers cuts, both PN MPs Ian Vassallo and Stephen Spiteri thanked health professionals for working in these “inhumane conditions”.
Spokesperson for health Stephen Spiteri said how medicines which require to be kept at low temperatures have been thrown away because of the power cuts. Apart from that, other patients with other health problems such as respiratory could not use their usual equipment to better their health.
On the Gozo general hospital, he said that some wards ended up without air conditioning because the generator could not keep up.
Spokesperson for mental health and primary care Ian Vassollo said that the power cuts have also affected the mental health sector. He said that patients at Mount Carmel hospital also ended up without electricity, affecting the generator of the facility. Patients ended up sleeping without air conditioning.
The Gzira primary health care centre’s generator also could not keep up with the demand, here apart from the air-conditioning system, equipment for X-rays was also affected. Because of the heat doctors had to also to transform the clinic’s reception into a makeshift ward and see patients there.
