At least four deaths recorded as a result of heat wave

The scorching temperatures that have engulfed Malta for the past week have directly contributed to the deaths of four people over the weekend.

One death linked to hyperthermia was registered between July 22 and July 23, according to a representative for the health ministry. Three other patients had dehydration as the main cause of their death.

The ages of the deceased were not given.

A body temperature that is higher than normal causes hyperthermia, which can cause symptoms like perspiration, thirst, fast breathing, and confusion.

It can proceed to heat exhaustion or heatstroke and become life-threatening if not addressed right away.

The representative also acknowledged that dehydration was a significant factor in the deaths of three further patients.

Magisterial inquiries into the deaths have been opened.

In total, there were 34 deaths over the weekend and most were due to cardiovascular conditions or chronic exacerbations of other chronic conditions.

The health authorities again issued a warning on the effect of the heat wave on health.

Temperatures have reached record levels in Malta these past few days, leading also, according to Enemalta, to extensive power cuts.
