A record 42.7 degrees Celsius was equalled for July on Monday, with temperatures expected to drop by as much as nine degrees as from Wednesday. A similar 42.7 degrees was reached in 1988, just one degree below the record 43.8 degrees registered in August 1999.
There is still a possibility that Monday’s record will be broken on Tuesday, as the Met Office is forecasting a high of 43 degrees, but strong winds will contribute to bringing down the temperature to 34 degrees on Wednesday.
The health authorities have issued a health warning in the wake of these high temperatures.
The high temperatures have been blamed for a series of power cuts that have hits the islands for the past days.
