Former Labour, now independent, MP Rosianne Cutajar said on social media that she has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the Inland Revenue Department.
Investigations on alleged tax evasion have been concluded, she wrote on Facebook, and no shortcomings had been found.
This follows two years of allegations and lies, she said.
“I am not expecting any apology from (former Standards Commissioner George) Hyzler who stopped my political career by judging me on the basis of probability and has now been rewarded with a prestigious overseas posting. Nor do I expect an apology from those who, were it up to them, would have stopped me from contesting the last general election and who wanted me to resign from MP,” she wrote.
Standards Commissioner George Hyzler had come to the conclusion that former Parliamentary Secretary Rosianne Cutajar violated the code of ethics by acting as a broker in dealings with Yorgen Fenech for the sale of an Mdina property and not declaring her income from it. Reports had read that Rosianne Cutajar and one of her political aides – Charles Farrugia – allegedly received around €46,000 each as brokerage fees for the sale of a €3.1 million Mdina property to Yorgen Fenech.
Hyzler had concluded that the evidence he had in his hand points out that Cutajar was “more likely than not” to have received a brokerage fee. Cutajar has denied receiving the funds, but admitted to have received €9,000 in cash from Fenech as a birthday gift.
Last April she resigned from the Labour parliamentary group but stayed on as an independent MP following the publication of hundreds of chats between her and Yorgen Fenech.
In her post, Cutajar said that she can now continue her life “more serenely than ever”, and without any shadow of irregularity.
“Imagine however if I had been found guilty,” she remarked. But now that nothing untoward has been found, the people who accused me will remain silent. “What will they do now? Or doesn’t justice apply to Labourites?”
