The Nationalist Party (PN) on Wednesday said that the magisterial inquiry into the death of Jean Paul Sofia, which was published today, further confirms the importance and need to hold a public inquiry to uncover the whole truth and ensure justice is delivered in this case.
PN said that the Magistrate overseeing this inquiry, Marseann Farrugia, clearly states in page 78 of her inquiry that the magisterial inquiry is not able to examine whether there were administrative or legislative deficiencies in the situation.
“Magistrate Marseann Farrugia also claimed that the evidence collected by her indicates institutional, systemic and even legislative deficiencies, and that these deficiencies can form the merit of other investigations by the competent authorities according to the law,” added the PN.
They said that this report shows that Prime Minister Robert Abela has been lying about his reasons for arguing against the public inquiry and that he has spent months trying to prevent it, even “forcing his Members of Parliament to vote against it”.
In reply, the Labour Party saud that the publication of the magisterial inquiry brought to nothing the lies by the PN that there was a cover-up. The PM had kept his word and published the inquiry.
The question people are asking is why no one from the PN appealed for the magisterial inquiry to be finished on time. The omly interest the PN had was to use the situation for political gain, the PL said.
