PN urges government to immediately publish report by Committee of Media Experts

The Nationalist Party (PN) urged the government to immediately publish the report prepared by the Committee of Media Experts which was presented to Prime Minister Robert Abela and Justice Minister Jonathan Attard last Monday.

The Office of the Prime Minister announced that the report had been presented to Robert Abela on Monday but no mention was made of whether it would be published to the public, the PN added.

The PN said that they expect the Government to be transparent and honest in this regard, and that “It is therefore essential that this report no longer remains a secret but is published in full so that everyone can understand what the Government has in front of it.”

The PN recalled a situation from a few months ago in which the Government “had brought before the Parliament three draft laws which were made in secret”, and that those bills “showed how the Government’s intention was to continue trying to stifle freedom of expression and the right to information.”

The PN said it will continue to listen to those with an interest in the media sector, and aim to ensure that law changes are made to support and protect journalists and the media sector in Malta.

The statement was signed by Karol Aquilina and Claudette Buttigieg.
