The Civil Protection Department said that it will be sending 25 mine detectors to be used in Ukraine.
This is the second time this year that the department is sending humanitarian aid to Ukraine, it said, having sent generators last January. The CPD said that this donation of mine detectors is being made as part of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism which Malta forms part of, and that these detectors will be used in restricted areas within Ukraine.
The Chief Assistance Rescue Officer of the CPD, Fredrick Sammut, said that these mine detectors will be used by the Ukrainian people to ensure that land is safe.
Minister for Home Affairs and Security Byron Camilleri visited the CPD quarters in Ħal Far and spoke about the CPD’s actions in providing support at an international level. “Malta is once again sending humanitarian aid to another country,” Camilleri said.
The Minister also made mention of how the CPD also sent aid to Turkey, Greece, Syria, and Libya earlier this year.
CPD Director General Peter Paul Coleiro and Director of Operations Anthony Pisani were also present.
