Minister for Justice and the Reform of the Construction Sector Jonathan Attard has appointed a panel of professionals to serve as court-assigned mediators in family disputes. These mediators will be selected on a roster basis to facilitate constructive discussions between parties.
The minister highlighted the vital role of mediation in the justice system, emphasising its purpose in fostering dialogue and promoting solutions that prioritize the well-being of families, particularly children. “A mediator’s role extends beyond facilitating discussions. It involves guiding parties towards amicable agreements, reducing the need for lengthy court proceedings,” he stated.
Recent statistics underscore the significance of mediation in family law. In 2024 alone, 1,708 cases were successfully resolved through mediation, while 1,831 new cases were filed.
The appointment of this panel reflects the government’s commitment to a more efficient justice system. The minister also expressed his gratitude to the mediators who contributed to the recent public consultation on the Family Court.
Minister Jonathan Attard noted that work is already underway to assess the numerous submissions received during the consultation. The next step will involve implementing reforms through legislative changes and necessary investments to enhance the justice system’s effectiveness.
He urged all professionals in the field of family law, including lawyers, social workers, and other experts, to actively promote mediation as the best approach to resolving family conflicts.
“With collective effort and collaboration, we can ensure that families facing difficult situations receive the support they need while fostering a culture of dialogue and justice that places family well-being at its core,” the minister concluded.
Vanessa Grech, Chief Executive Officer of the Court Services Agency, was also present at the ceremony.
The minister congratulated her on her new role and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that families in distress receive the necessary support to navigate challenging times.
