Student group SDM on Saturday expressed serious concern following the recent revelation that the University of Malta will be limiting the availability of elective units due to a reduction in funding.
In an internal email circulated to faculties and lecturers during the Easter recess, it was confirmed that the University will no longer be employing part-time lecturers to deliver elective units, unless they form part of compulsory study programmes, SDM said.
This development, SDM said in a statement, directly affects the student body, significantly limiting the diversity and flexibility of academic pathways available to students across all faculties. Elective units play a crucial role in enriching the student experience, allowing individuals to tailor their academic journey, broaden their knowledge, and explore interdisciplinary interests.
SDM said it believes that such decisions undermine the University’s commitment to academic freedom and quality education. This statement is being published to raise awareness of this issue and call on University authorities and relevant government entities to immediately address the lack of funding which is hindering the holistic development of students.
“We urge the Government, to prioritise investment in education and ensure that the University of Malta remains a space that encourages academic exploration, not one constrained by financial limitations. Students must not be treated as bargaining chips in funding disputes-they deserve consistent access to a rich and well-rounded education that empowers them to thrive,” the group said.
