Man arrested in cocaine drug bust worth €2 million

The police carried out a successful operation at the Malta Freeport that led to the arrest of a 37-year-old man and the seizure of €2 million worth of drugs.

During surveillance carried out by the Maltese Police at the Malta Freeport, with assistance from the Port’s own security officers, a vehicle exiting the Freeport was stopped on Wednesday at around 5.45am, as part of investigations related to drug importation into Malta.

Following an inspection of the man’s vehicle, 7 kilograms of a substance suspected to be cocaine were found. Further searches conducted at the port led to the discovery of an additional 28 kilograms of drugs, also believed to be cocaine, with a total street value of around €2 million.

The drugs were allegedly removed from the container in which they arrived by the arrested man, who works at the port, and was hidden by him to be gradually extracted.

In connection with this case, an inquiry has been launched by Magistrate Dr. Ian Farrugia, and police investigations are still ongoing.

The man, who resides in Xgħajra, was arraigned before Magistrate Astrid May Grima. TVM reported that he was charged with drug possession, importation, and association in drug trafficking. He pleaded not guilty.
