Coronavirus: Employer bodies write to PM for government to assist businesses

Four employer bodies have written to the Prime Minister requesting government intervention to assist business hit by the economic effects of the Coronavirus spread.

The Malta Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber of SMEs, the Malta Employers’ Association and the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association sent their request in a short letter signed by the respective presidents.

The employer bodies are requesting that the government supports businesses to retain staff on payroll by 50% of the basic wage paid by the government and 25 per cent paid by the employer, capped at the average wage.

The second request is support for self-employed persons in difficulty of 75% of basic income paid by government, capped at the average wage.

The third request is government guaranteed loans to assist businesses to retain staff and ensure continuity, with no collateral requirement.

The eligibility for the above is for businesses who register a loss of 25% or more in turnover in the January-June period when compared to same months in 2019.
