IN PHOTOS: Malta unites in memory of Jean Paul Sofia

Thousands united on Monday night in memory of Jean Paul Sofia in what was a defiant vigil a mere hour after Prime Minister Robert Abela succumbed to months of pressure to call a public inquiry into the youngster’s death.

Sofia was 20 years old when he was killed in a construction collapse in Corradino Industrial Estate last December and calls for reform to the construction sector – spearheaded by a public inquiry have gained traction ever since.

Thousands gathered in Castille Square on Monday evening in a vigil prompted by the government’s refusal to back a public inquiry in Parliament five days prior.

Abela however that same evening announced a complete U-turn which he said was prompted by a renewed extension in the magisterial inquiry on the case.

This did not stop thousands from gathering at the steps of his office that night, as planned.

The Malta Independent’s Marc Galdes was there to chronicle the protest in photos.
