Transport Malta issued nearly 17,000 contraventions in the first six months of the year, the authority said Saturday.
“The authority’s relentless efforts to ensure road safety have resulted in a significant number of contraventions and impoundments, demonstrating its commitment to creating safer roads for all users,” a statement said.
Commenting on the significance of the enforcement work conducted by Transport Malta’s Enforcement Officers, Jonathan Borg, the CEO of Transport Malta, emphasized, “Road safety is a top priority for Transport Malta, and we take great pride in the dedication and commitment shown by our Enforcement Officers in ensuring compliance and reducing traffic violations. The challenges in this sector are substantial, but with a determined spirit, the Authority is fully prepared to rise to the occasion and offer safer roads for all road users.”
During the period from January to June 2023, Transport Malta’s Enforcement Officers issued a remarkable total of 16,598 contraventions for various traffic contraventions across the country. The breakdown of the contraventions is as follows:
· Contraventions on escooters: 587
· Contraventions on Y plate cabs: 2,069
· Overall traffic contraventions: 13,556
Furthermore, Transport Malta also imposed administrative fees on Y plate cabs, amounting to 3,042, highlighting the Authority’s resolve to maintain high standards of safety and compliance in the public transportation sector.
Transport Malta’s proactive approach to road safety includes the impoundment of vehicles that are deemed unroadworthy or involved in severe traffic infringements. The impoundment data for the first half of 2023 is as follows:
· Escooters: 318
· Vehicles: 280
During the school year, Transport Malta also offered a towing service in case a car stops on an arterial road and is obstructing the flow of traffic. A total of 4,944 people made use of this service during the first 6 months of this year.
