Minister Ian Borg came in for some criticism on the social media in the past hours after a photo showed him making use of a tent for shade while being politically responsible for the chopping off of hundreds of trees.

The Infrastructure Minister was pictured by the Department of Information under a tent as he addressed the media to announce the completion of the Tal-Balal road project.

Borg is under fire by environmental groups and many other concerned citizens as the government pushes ahead with the idea of a Central Link project, a development of a road which will eliminate agricultural land and lead to the chopping off of 500 trees in the Attard area.

Trees provide natural shade but they are being chopped off, and here we have the minister having a tent erected to provide shade, was a common comment on the social media in the past hours.

Over the past months many trees have been shopped off the make way for government projects. The latest Planning Authority approval for the Central Link project has continued to spark outrage against the government for its disregard to the environment and the importance of trees.

Social media has been awash with cartoons and messages targeting the government, and this latest photo showing Borg under a tent added fuel to the already raging fire of discontent.

An event to protest against the chopping of trees on the road to Rabat is planned for Sunday while funds have been collected to open a court case to stop the government from implementing its plans for the Central Link.
