There is nightmare traffic on Regional Road as Infrastructure Malta has closed the northbound lane as works on a project in the area continue.

Traffic is at a complete standstill, motorists have told this newsroom, with many drivers honking their horns in frustration.

Some motorists told The Malta Independent that it had taken them around 2 hours to travel a distance of 100 metres.

In a Facebook post uploaded shortly before 3pm, Infrastructure Malta said the northbound lane would be closed between 5pm an 5am between today and Saturday. However, motorists complained that the warning had been issued too late and that many people had not had time to see it.

IM has urged motorists to follow diversion signs to Salvu Psaila Street, towards Birkirkara, or via Msida Valley Road towards Tal-Qroqq and Kappara.

The final phase of the Regional Road project is in progress, IM said. “We are widening this principal north-south link to 6 lanes and upgrading 7 of its junctions, for increased safety and reduced travel times,” the agency said.
