Drivers are being urged to avoid the St Paul’s Bay to Xemxija after a number of fires broke out in fields in the area.
One resident said an explosion had been heard a short while before the fire broke out.
Another person said on Facebook that cars are still passing through the area but there is smoke everywhere and people are slowing down to see what is happening.
Another said it was safe to drive through but urged motorists to exercise caution.
A number of fire engines are on site. Three separate areas are ablaze.
Police officers are also on site and a nearby residential area is being evacuated as a precaution.
Meanwhile, people are also reporting that parts of St Paul’s Bay and Burmarrad are without electricity. It is not known at this stage whether this is related to the fire.
