Fire-fighters from the Civil Protection Department were seen battling a blaze in Bizazza Street, Sliema this evening. The fire has now been put out.

It is believed there were two fires, one which was in the shop below an apartment block and another in the common area of another block, some 50 meters further up the road.

People were seen being evacuated from the apartments. Some of those rescued also received medical assistance at the scene, including oxygen. Sources on site said that no one suffered any major injuries.

The cause of the fires is believed to have been caused by a problem in the mains electricity supply.

Several fire engines were seen at the scene, as well as an ambulance and Enemalta personnel.
