A 39-year-old woman from Hamrun was handed a suspended sentence after she admitted to charges related to a series of thefts in Santa Venera, Birkirkara and Qormi.

CCTV footage of one of her thefts was uploaded on the social media in the past days, leading the police to her arrest.

Defence lawyers Franco Debono and Amadeus Cachia said that the accused claimed that she stole in order to feed her children. They asked for her to be given assistance and for her difficult circumstances to be taken into consideration when handing down the sentence.

The prosecution argued that the accused had said she had given back what she had stolen, including a wallet, but the money was not returned.

The Court ordered her name not to be published to protect the identity of her four children.

Magistrate Charmaine Galea handed her a one year jail sentence suspended for three years and ordered her to pay back the €600 which she has stolen, within a period of six months.
