Judge Lawrence Quintano has been reappointed as the Chairperson of the Permanent Commission Against Corruption.
A notice published in the Government Gazette announced that Judge Quintano would hold the role for a period of five years, starting from 8 September 2019. The reappointment means that he will continue to serve as the commission’s chairperson, having been first appointed on 9 September 2014.
His reappointment was approved by the President of the Republic.
The permanent commission against corruption was established in 1988 and its aim is to conduct investigations into cases of alleged corruption, investigations which can be conducted on their own initiative or based on reports from other.
Quintano is joined on the Commission by Philip M. Magri and former police chief commissioner John Rizzo as members, who were appointed in 2017 and January 2018 respectively.
Last November, Justice Minister Owen Bonnici said in Parliament that the commission had received six cases in 2016, the same amount in 2017 and a solitary case in 2018, bringing the total of cases received up to 13 as of that month. There were a further 10 cases which, at the time, were still pending, Bonnici had said.
