A 25-year-old Colombian man lost his life this afternoon after he found himself in serious difficulty among strong while swimming at in Coral Lagoon, at l-Aħrax in Mellieha.

Police were called to the scene at around 4.35pm this afternoon after having been informed that three people were in difficulty after the sea in the picturesque swimming spot suddenly turned rough.

The deceased’s swimming companions were another fellow Colombian and a Mexican, both of whom were rescued.

Civil Protection Department and Armed Forces of Malta personnel were called to the scene.  A 24-year-old Colombian was saved by the Armed Forces from the water, while the 29-year-old Mexican man was found clinging to a cliff edge for dear life. 

Both casualties were given immediate medical assistance.

The third swimmer, however, was nowhere to be found at first and was eventually found lifeless after an intensive search.

Duty Magistrate Dr. Doreen Clarke LL.D is conducting an inquiry and has appointed several experts.  The police investigations are also ongoing.
