A climate strike was held in Valletta on Friday evening as part of an international movement involving millions worldwide. Climate activists and concerned citizens gathered around Tritons Fountain to vent their anger and concern over the state of the world’s environment and climate change.
Some staged a ‘die-in’, which has become a standard in climate change protests, in which the lied down on a cloth to mimic the destruction of the world’s ecosystems, and eventually that of humankind itself, which relies on those same ecosystems.
Extinction Rebellion and Friends of the Earth said they were with the turnout. As a number of people of all ages participated in the ‘die-in’, lying down next to the Parliament in Valletta to symbolise the consequences of inaction on climate change, 200 people also joined to support the action.
Speakers also presented their main demand: That the Maltese Parliament declares a climate emergency, and act on it immediately.
The strike was held in support with the Global Climate Strike being organised in countries around the world, by local and national representatives of the Extinction rebellion movement.
