A letter sent by independent candidate Arnold Cassola to the European socialists to ask them whether they would accept disgraced former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat as candidate is still unanswered.

Speaking to The Malta Independent on Wednesday, Cassola said he has also sent multiple reminders since he first sent the letter in January. But has received no reply as of yet.

In the letter sent the leaders of the Party of European Socialists and of the Socialist and Democratic Group in the EP, Cassola informed them about strong rumours that Muscat was seeking to represent the Labour Party in the next EP election, and Prime Minister Robert Abela’s willingness to accept him.

“As the Party of European Socialists knows well, in 2019 Joseph Muscat was voted the most corrupt world politician in the world by the OCCRP,” Cassola had written.

“Does the PES approve of this European candidature of one of its member parties?” he asked.

Muscat was forced to resign in 2020 following a political crisis which was triggered by the arrests in connection with the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in October 2017.

In an interview earlier this month, Cassola said that the S&D is divided on whether it should accept Muscat back under its wing.

In the letter he sent, Cassola has also noted that Maltese voters are entitled to know whether the European Socialists are ready to accept Muscat in their fold.

Muscat is being pushed to contest by Labour grassroots, but has so far declined to give a final decision.
