A girl aged 11 was critically injured on Monday morning after she was hit by a car in Mgarr, the police said.

The accident took place in Fisher Street at 7am.

The girl was hit by a Peugeot 308, driven by a 55-year-old man of St Paul’s Bay.

A medical team assisted the girl before she was transported to Mater Dei Hospital, where she was found to have suffered serious injuries.

The driver also needed hospital treatment for shock.

Magistrate Antoine Agius Bonnici is leading an inquiry.
