Transport Minister Chris Bonett has confirmed an internal investigation conducted by Transport Malta regarding missing and altered maritime fines has concluded.

In answering PN MP Ivan Castillo, Bonett said that the investigation was passed onto the police. “The next steps will be taken once the police completes its investigation into the matter”.

Media revealed how earlier this month, three maritime officials were allegedly involved in the tampering of fines.

It was recently reported by MaltaToday that at least 59% of maritime fines issued in 2021 were marked as ‘lost’. It also reported that several fines levied by the MEU in 2022 and 2023 were never mailed to the offenders within the legally mandated time frame.

When questioned in Parliament, Bonnett also sidestepped answering whether those implicated were still employed in their respective positions at the time of the alleged misconduct. He said that further action would be taken after the police conclude their investigation.
